Sports medicine expert joins UTHSCSA's physical therapy faculty

San Antonio (March 13, 2003) — The University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio welcomes orthopedic and sports medicine specialist Catherine Ortega as assistant professor in the department of physical therapy.

Ortega has worked with the WTA Tour, the professional women's tennis circuit, for 13 years, and with the United States Olympic Committee, traveling to well-known international events such as Wimbledon, the United States Open and the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games. Her experience includes sports medicine care for the U.S.A. Gymnastics Gold Medal Olympic team. A licensed physical therapist and board-certified orthopedic specialist, Ortega returns to San Antonio after completing a five week tour on the international circuit working in New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

"We are delighted to have Cathy join our staff and feel that she brings a great deal of expertise and international experience in the area of sports medicine," said Giovanni DeDomenico, Ph.D., professor and chairman of the department of physical therapy. "We feel Cathy is an invaluable asset and look forward to the expansion of our program to a doctoral curriculum with her as part of our team."
