UTHSCA sweeps Dental Technology Rodeo

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio congratulates Andres Rodriguez, a sophomore in the dental laboratory technology certificate program, for taking top honors in three of four categories and second place in the fourth category at the recent Dental Technology Rodeo, an annual professional competitive event sponsored by the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas (DLAT).

Because of his outstanding performance, Rodriguez earned the Dental Technician Rodeo Championship trophy for best overall performance by a dental technician. He captured first place recognition in the crown and bridge, ceramics and removable partial dentures category, as well as second place in the complete dentures category.

"The Rodeo gives you a chance to evaluate your skills and what you have to do to improve," Rodriguez said. As the school winning the most awards, the Health Science Center earned the right to keep the trophy until next year's event and was awarded a $500 scholarship for dental laboratory technology students.

Incidentally, Rodriguez had not planned to participate in competitions. His last-minute decision to compete left him without the proper equipment necessary to present his work. Hearing the news, companies on site to market products donated the tools, equipment and other materials Rodriguez needed to compete. Rodriguez ended up with enough materials to share with other participants.
