Cigarroa announces restorative dentistry chairman

Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, this month named James B. Summitt, D.D.S., to be chairman of the department of restorative dentistry. Dr. Summitt served as interim chairman since 2000.

"I am proud to be able to work with a department with such a dedicated faculty and staff," Dr. Summitt said. "I plan to continue to work toward a totally evidence-based curriculum and to help generate evidence in areas where it does not already exist. I also will work to increase the department's financial base to allow the faculty to meet increasing teaching and research needs in restorative dentistry."

Dr. Summitt's accomplishments include publishing a textbook for which he was the primary author. "Fundamentals of Operative Dentistry: A Contemporary Approach," now in its second edition, is used as the primary text in operative dentistry by more than half of the dental schools in America and many dental schools in England, Canada, Europe, South America and Asia.

Prior to joining the Health Science Center faculty 13 years ago, Dr. Summitt was director of dental services at Wilford Hall Medical Center. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1989.
