Walsh appointed to National Board of Medical Examiners

The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) has elected a San Antonio rehabilitation medicine specialist as a member of the board. Nicolas E. Walsh, professor and chairman of the department of rehabilitation medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC), will join 80 other board members. The NBME plays a leading role in ensuring the quality of medical care for patients nationwide.

"This group determines a physician's ability to apply knowledge and practice medicine. The NBME testing and standards determine who gets a license and who does not," Dr. Walsh said. "I am honored by my election to this very prestigious board."

In addition to setting the standards for licensing physicians, the NBME provides testing, educational and consultative research services to a number of medical specialty boards, societies and health sciences institutions. It also supports research in clinical skills assessment and advanced methods of testing.

Dr. Walsh chairs the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the national certifying agency for all physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists. The American Board of Medical Specialties nominated him for his current position on the NBME. Dr. Walsh will serve a four-year term as a board member.
