Emeritus professor publishes book on calorie restriction, aging

San Antonio (Jan. 8, 2003) — Edward J. Masoro, Ph.D., emeritus professor of physiology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and a pioneer of the caloric restriction model for retarding the aging process, has published a new book, "Caloric Restriction: A Key to Understanding and Modulating Aging," that covers this field of research to date.

The publisher is Elsevier Science and the book is part of the Research Profiles in Aging series.

Dr. Masoro, recipient of numerous awards for outstanding research, was founding director of the Aging Research and Education Center at UTHSCSA, where he served for 20 years as chairman of the department of physiology. He received his Ph.D. from The University of California at Berkeley and is a past president of the Gerontological Society of America.

Dr. Masoro's other books include the "Handbook of the Biology of Aging, Fifth Edition," published in 2001 by Academic Press.

"For many years, it has been known that when rats and mice are given a reduced amount of food, their life span is increased and they remain healthy and vigorous at advanced ages," Dr. Masoro wrote in a book summary for Elsevier. "What is the reason for this change in the usual pattern of aging? The evidence is overwhelming that the life extension results from a slowing of aging processes, and the factor responsible is the decrease in caloric intake."

Today many investigators are tackling how caloric restriction works. "It is felt that if the biological mechanisms of the anti-aging action of caloric restriction can be uncovered, we would gain an understanding of the basic nature of aging processes, which would, in turn, yield possible interventions in human aging," Dr. Masoro wrote. "This book aims to provide the growing number of researchers in this field with a detailed knowledge of what is known about caloric restriction, as well as insights on the future."
