Grand opening of UTHSCSA's Corpus Christi Transplant Clinic set for May 13

San Antonio (May 6, 2003) — Transplant patients in Corpus Christi now have access to some of the best transplant doctors in the nation, thanks to The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). The UTHSCSA will celebrate the grand opening of its new Transplant Clinic in Corpus Christi at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 13. An Open House will be held from 3 to 6 p.m.

The 1,500 square-foot facility is located at 1224 Third Street, Suite 8, in the Corpus Christi medical district near Spohn Hospital. The clinic will house three exam and consultation rooms as well as comfortable waiting areas. Patients who need liver and kidney transplants will be evaluated before and after their transplants. Eventually the clinic will treat patients with lung conditions. The clinic will allow patients to significantly reduce the number of trips to UTHSCSA's main campus in San Antonio where they usually receive treatment.

Glenn Halff, M.D., professor and interim chairman of the department of surgery, is the surgical director of the clinic and Kermit Speeg, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine and gastroenterology, is the medical director. William Kenneth Washburn, M.D., associate professor of surgery; Robert Esterl, M.D., associate professor of surgery; Gregory Avedis Abrahamian, M.D., assistant professor of surgery; and Charles Nolan, M.D., associate professor of medicine, also will work with patients at the clinic.

Dr. Washburn said the new clinic will allow more patients to have access to the university's highly regarded liver and kidney transplant program. "The extension of UTHSCSA's transplant services to Corpus Christi delivers the highest level of transplant care available to patients of Corpus Christi and the surrounding area — the same care currently provided at our main campus," he said. "Expanding to Corpus Christi also strengthens the UTHSCSA's presence and reputation for providing top-quality health care services to South Texas patients."

For more information, call LaRhae Nichols, R.N., assistant professor of surgery, at ext. (210) 567-5777. The phone number for the new clinic is (361) 879-0005.
