Hispanic Heritage Month celebration
A&M-Kingsville president, Voces de San Antonio to visit UTHSC

San Antonio (Sept. 5, 2003) — Dr. Rumaldo Z. Juárez, president of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, will be the guest speaker at the opening ceremony of Hispanic Heritage Month at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC). The event begins at noon Monday, Sept. 8, on the patio between the School of Nursing building and the Dental School building. The campus is at 7703 Floyd Curl in the South Texas Medical Center.

After Dr. Juárez's speech, the musical group Voces de San Antonio will present a choral performance. The singers are members of the Hispanic Heritage Society. Outstanding UTHSC faculty and staff will receive Hispanic Excellence Awards. The public is invited to attend.

At 3 p.m. Monday in room 1.228 of the School of Nursing building, Dr. Juárez will meet with UTHSC faculty and members of the public in a roundtable discussion to discuss collaborative efforts between Texas health professions schools and other educational institutions. School of Nursing faculty who study Hispanic health disparities will present research posters in the room.

Festivities continue from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday with a reception in the UTHSC auditorium foyer for Mexican artist Antonio Arellanes, whose works will be displayed in the foyer in an exhibition titled "The Best of the Southwest." The public is invited.

Other events during September include a scientific poster presentation by UTHSC students from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the foyer of the Dolph Briscoe Library.

Hispanic Heritage Month at UTHSC is made possible by the Hispanic Centers of Excellence in the Dental School and School of Medicine and the Juntos Podemos Project in the School of Nursing. Special thanks is extended to the office of the president, the dental and nursing dean's offices, the Hispanic Medical Society, the Mexican American Physicians Association, the Hispanic Faculty Association, Los Barrios Restaurant, Piedras Negras de Noche Mexican Restaurant, Los Patios Restaurant and Jim's Restaurants.
