Rodriguez to assume regimental command in Texas Army National Guard (5-5-00)

Charles G. Rodriguez, Ph.D., of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, will assume command of the 131st Regiment (Combat Arms), a regional training organization for the reserve components of the U.S. Army, on May 6 at Camp Mabry in Austin.

The 131st provides military professional development courses for soldiers in combat arms military specialties such as infantry, armor and field artillery. The 131st Regimentís academy also trains officer candidates and provides career leadership courses for non-commissioned officers to meet the needs of the reserve components in a nine-state region that includes Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.

Col. Charles "Chuck" Rodriguez is the son of Col. (retired) Joseph "Joe" C. Rodriguez, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Korean War. Col. Joseph Rodriguez and his wife, Rose, live in El Paso. The immediate family also includes Chuckís sister, Karen, who lives in Texas, and a brother, Larry, who lives in Nevada.

Col. Charles Rodriguez has served in uniform for 25 years, including eight years on active duty, 11 years in the U.S. Army Reserve and six years in the Texas Army National Guard. He is among a very small percentage of Hispanics serving in senior positions in the Army National Guard and among the 4 percent nationally of National Guard officers who are graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

In his civilian life, Dr. Rodriguez is Executive Director for Development and Public Affairs at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is responsible for media relations, institutional publications and Web communications, and for fund-raising coordination at the Health Science Center.

Dr. Rodriguez is married to Cappy Ann (Prevost) Rodriguez and has two children, Chris, a college student, and daughter Johnny, graduating this year from high school. Home is in San Antonio. A military biography of Col. Charles G. Rodriguez is attached.
