Harkless serves second term on VA medical advisory group

San Antonio (June 4, 2003) — Lawrence B. Harkless, DPM, professor of orthopaedics and director of the podiatry residency program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC), recently was reappointed to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Special Medical Advisory Group. His term extends through May 2005.

"The South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie Murphy Division, is one of the Health Science Center's primary teaching hospitals, and Dr. Harkless is acutely attuned to the issues involved in diagnosing, treating and managing foot diseases in veteran patients," said Ronald P. Williams, M.D., Ph.D., FACS, professor and chairman of orthopaedics at UTHSC.

Dr. Harkless, a researcher and advocate for reducing the rate of amputations of lower extremities in diabetics, also is chair of the Texas Diabetes Council and has served on that panel since 1995. President George W. Bush, at the time governor of Texas, twice appointed Dr. Harkless to the council. Gov. Rick Perry appointed him chair in 2001. Dr. Harkless has trained hundreds of doctors of podiatric medicine at UTHSC during the last two decades.

Dr. Harkless founded and continues to coordinate the annual Diabetic Foot Conference that brings hundreds of researchers from around the world to San Antonio each December.
