Fiesta de Tejas offers rip-roarin' good time on April 19
(4-04-02)

Fiesta in San Antonio couldn't kick off with a better event than the 18th annual "Fiesta de Tejas," presented on the campus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive. Fiesta de Tejas runs from 3 p.m. to midnight Friday, April 19, in the campus recreation area near Babcock Road. Drivers are encouraged to enter the Health Science Center from Babcock at Merton Minter.

The family oriented festival features an expanded family area, live music, games, and more than 50 food, drink and merchandise booths. Parking is free.

Tickets are free for children 6 and under, $3 for children 7-12, and $6 presale for adults or $8 at the gate. Adults over 65 get in free. Tickets are on sale through 4:30 p.m. April 19 at the Health Science Center Bookstore, located near the School of Nursing building. As a tribute to their courage and patriotism, police, firefighters and members of the military will get in for $6 with proper ID at the gate. Adults may bring a new children's book for the Reach Out and Read program and receive a dollar discount at the gate.

Be sure to bring your appetite. Food booths will sell gorditas, funnel cakes, cotton candy, sausage on a stick, chalupas, candy, hot dogs, nachos, Frito pie, shrimp kabobs, popcorn, roasted corn, hamburgers, chicken wings, turkey legs, fajitas, Indochinese food, tamales, cheesecake, enchiladas, drinks of all kinds and more.

The live entertainment will include a diverse selection of music and shows. Youngsters will have a great time in the Family Courtyard, which will include games, face painting, a moon bounce and entertainment just for them. Other booths will offer souvenirs, jewelry, fingerprinting and crime prevention information, and more.

Proceeds from the 2002 Fiesta de Tejas will support student scholarships and campus projects. The event is organized and run by volunteers from the Health Science Center.

Children are likely to enjoy several acts on the Family Stage, including appearances by April and Her Wild West Puppets at 6, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m., and magician Alberto the Great, who will perform at 5 and 9 p.m. Times and acts are subject to change. For more information, check out the Fiesta de Tejas Web site at http://oerweb.uthscsa.edu/fiesta/.

The Adult Stage will offer the country sounds of Sundown starting at 3 p.m., the Tejano style of George Colon and Texas Lightning beginning at 5 p.m., the Top 40 dance music of Teri and Flashback starting at 7:30 p.m., and the red-hot rock strains of the Texas Chilipeppers beginning at 10 p.m. What a lineup!

Fiesta de Tejas offers a free Tag-a-Tot program. Should you and your child become separated, all we have to do is check the child's tag and make an announcement.

Bring your family and your lawn chairs to this official Fiesta event and enjoy live entertainment, delicious food and fun activities for all ages. We look forward to seeing you there.
