Endowment honors retiring dean (6-3-99)

A newly created endowment at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will support teaching about the non-technical, humanistic sides of patient care. The endowment is in the Health Science Centerís Medical School.

The Hans and Charlotte Salinger Endowment for the Center for Ethics and the Humanities in Health Care was established to honor Marvin Forland, M.D., retiring professor of medicine and associate dean for clinical affairs in the Medical School. It also memorializes the parents of endowment creators Ellinor Salinger Forland and Gerhard Salinger.

The Center for Ethics and the Humanities in Health Care is dedicated to raising the visibility of ethics and humanities at the Health Science Center. The center sponsors bimonthly journal clubs for faculty, quarterly seminars for practicing health professionals and summer research internships for students.

"The Salinger-Forland Endowment will become the cornerstone for an active, expert teaching program in the non-technical, humanistic aspects of patient care," said Dr. Henry Perkins, professor of medicine and the center's interim director.

Individuals may contribute to the endowment by calling the Office of University Relations, (210) 567-2056.
