Brey named to American Academy of Neurology board of directors

San Antonio (June 3, 2003) — Robin L. Brey, M.D., professor of medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, recently began a two-year term on the board of directors of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

Dr. Brey is interested in the immune system's effects on thrombosis, the formation of blood clots. She is particularly interested in the role of antiphospholipid antibodies. Dr. Brey also heads a research team studying the neurological complications of connective tissue diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She was instrumental in establishing a longitudinal cohort study of neurological and neuropsychological complications in SLE patients seen at the Frederic C. Bartter General Clinical Research Center housed at the Audie Murphy Division, South Texas Veterans Health Care System.

Dr. Brey and her research team are using brain scans in an attempt to pinpoint malfunctions in different regions of the brains of lupus patients. That study is being conducted in conjunction with the Health Science Center's Research Imaging Center.

The AAN, an association of more than 18,000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals, is dedicated to improving patient care through education and research.
