Donors seek to create podiatric professorship (5/22/97)
Colleagues, friends and patients of a prominent San Antonio podiatrist are contributing funds to establish the Louis T. Bogy, DPM, Professorship in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
The new professorship is designed to enhance teaching and research in podiatry, while honoring Dr. Bogy, who has spent his lifetime treating problems of the foot. Dr. Bogy's efforts to help create a residency training program for podiatrists in Texas helped found the existing program at the Health Science Center where he served as chief of residency training from 1972 until 1977. Today, in addition to maintaining a private practice, Dr. Bogy is chairman emeritus of the podiatry program and clinical professor of orthopaedics at the Health Science Center.
James J. Young, PhD, dean of the Medical School, commented, "This is an effort to honor and recognize Dr. Bogy for his significant contributions to podiatry education in Texas, and, through this professorship, a wonderful way to add luster to our expanding support of podiatry in San Antonio and South Texas."
Says James D. Heckman, MD, chairman of orthopaedics, "It is most appropriate to establish this educational endowment honoring Dr. Bogy because, in the entire American podiatric community, he has been the strongest proponent of excellence in education."
The effort to honor Dr. Bogy for his distinguished career and nationwide influence in podiatric medicine is being led by one of Dr. Bogy's former students, Lawrence B. Harkless, DPM, professor in the podiatric residency training program in the orthopaedics department.
"I am pleased to announce that a $30,000 challenge grant was made as the first donation toward the $100,000 needed to create the endowed professorship," Dr. Harkless said. He and his associates are inviting others to contribute to this new fund.
Donors interested in contributing to the Bogy professorship should send their gifts to the Dr. Bogy Professorship, University Relations Office, UTHSCSA, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78284-7835.
