Brooke Army urologist to do fellowship at Health Science Center

San Antonio (April 2, 2003) — Javier Hernandez, M.D., a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Fort Sam Houston and staff urologist at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, has been awarded a prestigious two-year fellowship to study with urology faculty at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA).

Dr. Hernandez was selected to receive the American Foundation for Urologic Disease Fellowship to support his research with Ian M. Thompson, M.D., professor of surgery and chief of urology at UTHSCSA. Dr. Hernandez will study urologic oncology, including prostate cancer. Dr. Hernandez has had a long-term interest in urologic cancers and how these diseases affect Hispanic men. His specific research will focus on a group of genes that appear to confer a higher risk of prostate cancer development to some men.

"Dr. Hernandez is a brilliant young urologist who was on the faculty at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in August, Ga.," Dr. Thompson said. "The fellowship he has received is highly competitive and reflects the profession's recognition of his career potential."
