Excellence in faculty and trainee research was highlighted and celebrated during the department of Medicine’s 6th annual Research Day held recently.

“We all learned a great deal as we gained further understanding of the many contributions of department of medicine investigators over a wide range of basic and clinical research,” said Dr. Robert A. Clark, professor and chairman of the department of medicine. “I am impressed not only by the quality of science, but by the broad scope of our research. From the bench to patient studies, our investigators cover it all,” he said.

The event brought together investigators from all 16 divisions of the department of medicine, as well as from other UTHSC departments. Faculty and research trainees participated in oral and poster presentations, a panel discussion on “Technology Transfer,” and a dinner and awards ceremony.

A total of 92 abstracts were submitted and the competition for prizes was stiff. Two awards were presented in each of the four categories – junior faculty, residents, clinical fellows and post-doctoral fellows. Three additional awards were made by the committee of judges: Research Committee’s Choice, Chairman’s Choice, and Dean’s Choice.

Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, professor and chair of medicine at the University of California at San Diego, was the distinguished guest. He participated in the panel discussion and presented a scientific lecture titled, “The Molecular Mechanisms of Platelet Production.”

“This was an impressive demonstration of the outstanding research taking place here in San Antonio,” Dr. Kaushansky said. “I was delighted to participate.”

Research Day was supported in part by unrestricted educational grants from the following companies: Applied Biosystems, BD Biosciences, Fisher Scientific, Invitrogen, Leeds Instruments, Promega, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Thermo Forma, and Wyeth.
