Marsha Griffin, M.D., adjunct assistant professor at the Regional Academic Health Center and chief of pediatrics at Brownsville Community Health Center, has been selected for the 2012 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Local Heroes Award. The award recognizes pediatricians who are leaders through community action and advocacy for children.

Minnette Son, M.D., professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine’s Division of Critical Care, nominated Dr. Griffin. Dr. Son cited Dr. Griffin's role as director of Community for Children, an advocacy elective for students and residents, and for her leadership in establishing the first medical-legal partnerships in Texas, Medical-Legal Assistance for families/San Antonio and MedicoLegal Partnership/Rio Grande Valley and other initiatives.

Dr. Griffin serves as medical director for the Rio Grande Valley partnership, working closely with attorneys in the clinic to aid indigent families whose legal problems negatively impact their health. In her letter of nomination, Dr. Son, who mentored Dr. Griffin during residency and beyond, writes, “Marsha has made a lifetime commitment to serving the indigent and underserved....She is a real hero: selfless in her actions, passionate about her convictions and fearless in doing what it takes to make her community a better place.”

Dr. Griffin will be honored at the Community Pediatrics Awards Luncheon on Oct. 21 at the AAP National Conference in New Orleans.
