Three dental faculty begin national leadership roles
Dr. Garcia president of the ACP
Dr. Garcia, the new president of the ACP, is an accomplished author, having published numerous articles and abstracts. She has edited several dental textbooks, served as a reviewer and editorial board member for several scientific journals, and co-authored the text “Osseointegration and Occlusal Rehabilitation.” She is a diplomate and fellow of the ACP.
“In my new role, I am moving advocacy for prosthodontics and prothodontists to the forefront of the ACP. We have developed several initiatives involving the American Dental Association (ADA), other ADA-recognized specialty organizations and the Academy of General Dentists on a national level,” Dr. Garcia said. “Dental specialists represent approximately 20 percent of all dentists and represent leaders across the spectrum of private practice and academic institutions.”
Dr. Steffensen new ADEA leadership fellow
Dr. Steffenson is associate dean for research and a professor of periodontics in the Dental School, and a professor of biochemistry in the School of Medicine.
His yearlong ADEA fellowship program, beginning in March, is designed to develop the nation’s most promising individuals at academic dental institutions to become leaders in dental and higher education.
Dr. Steffensen teaches dental students and postdoctoral residents topics ranging from basic biology to clinical periodontology. He also heads an active research program focusing on the biology of the extracellular matrix in health and disease. In addition, he directs the National Institutes of Health-funded Craniofacial Oral-Biology Student Training in Academic Research (COSTAR) comprehensive research training program for students and fellows engaged in craniofacial-oral biology research training at the Health Science Center.
“I have heard many good things about the ADEA Leadership Institute from colleagues at the Health Science Center and other institutions. I look forward to the experiences that I may gain and which ultimately will benefit our school and university,” Dr. Steffensen said.
