SWOT Analysis

A SWOT analysis (alternatively SWOT matrix) is a structured planning method used to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

During a SWOT Analysis, participants should ask the following questions:

  • Is this something we have?  If yes, do we want it or not?
    • If you have it and want to keep it, it is a strength.  This is a preservation or maintenance goal.
    • If you have it and don't want it, it is a weakness or opportunity for improvement.  This is an elimination goal.
  • Is this somthing we don't have ?  If yes, do we want it or not?
    • If you don't have it and want it, it is an opportunity.  This is an achievement or acquisition goal.
    • If you don't have it and don't want it, it is a threat.  This is an avoidance goal.
