Previous updates and original announcement regarding the 'Electrical Power Outage for the Long Campus on December 20 -22' are as follows -

Update for December 21 - City Public Service (CPS) has replaced the electrical switch and transformers on Saturday, the first full day of the electrical power outage. Normal power is scheduled to be restored on December 22 at 11:00pm.

We will have the 23rd as a fall-back day should we need it. The electrical outage only involves the Long Campus and will not affect the MARC, CTRC, Greehey, Texas Research Park, Harlingen, Edinburg, and Laredo campuses.

The outage is necessary to replace the electrical switches and transformers that supply 35kV power to the Long Campus due to components failing infrared testing (overheating) and need to be replaced (installed in 1974).  This electrical outage will affect normal power. Buildings on the Long Campus that will be affected are:

  • AAB
  • Administration
  • Auditorium
  • Basic Science
  • Cafeteria
  • Dental
  • Facilities
  • Forensic Science
  • Lecture Hall
  • Library
  • Medical
  • Nursing School & Nursing Addition
  • Print Shop
  • UT Police buildings
  • Warehouse

During the outage, all backup generator power will be available. Staff members from Facilities Management, UT Police, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Materials Management, Information Management and Services (IMS), and Access Control will be present during the outage.  Please be sure that you have posted updated contact names and phone numbers on any sensitive equipment.

Access to network (data, wi-fi and telephone) and enterprise databases for all applications will be available during the electrical outage from locations that have power. Access to wi-fi may not be available in the specific areas where the power is off.  You will not be able to remote into your desktop computers and doors with card readers will not be functioning. Updated status alerts will be posted on the UTHSCSA web site.

Please be sure that you have posted updated contact names and phone numbers on any sensitive equipment, standalone freezers, and walk-in cold boxes. Instruct your lab staff not to open freezers and temperature-sensitive devices on these days. Please remove food from refrigerators in private offices and community kitchens. Materials Management recommends that you order dry ice for stock in the event that freezers and cold boxes go into alarm.  Materials Management will be present during the outage for any supplies you may need. Essential personnel from UTPD, EHS, IMS, Access Control and Facilities Management will all be present at the time of the outage. For further information on preparing for a power outage, please visit the EHS web site at http://research.uthscsa.edu/safety/.

This electrical outage only involves the Long Campus and will not affect the MARC, CTRC, Greehey, Texas Research Park, Harlingen, Edinburg, and Laredo campuses. Please note that during the power outage, you must have your campus badge to access the buildings. View the following diagram of buildings and their entry points, designated parking, and key phone numbers.
