The School of Medicine Alumni Association will host Reunion Weekend 2013 this year on October 18-19. Please mark this date on your calendars. All MD, residency and fellowship graduates of the School of Medicine are welcome. The following classes will be celebrating special reunions this year: 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 2003 and 2008.

On Saturday, March 16 the Alumni Association held its first-quarter “Connect the Docs” event. This annual alumni event at Becker Vineyards was hosted by Drs. Joe ’05 and Emily ’05 Becker. Alumni throughout the Texas Hill Country enjoyed a private wine tasting and tour of the vineyard facility followed by a wine and cheese reception and a three-course dinner with wine pairings. Dora Martinez, M.D. ’07 was recently selected to receive a 2012 Pfizer Teacher Development Award for her scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and dedication to family medicine. Dr. Martinez is a part-time clinical professor for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Department of Family and Community Medicine, through the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen. Brian L. Fowler, M.D. ’85 recently published The Beating of My Hearts: A Tale of Two Hearts, Their Disease, Their Treatment, and Their Cure, a true story about his battle with cardiac sarcoidosis and his journey of faith. A native Texan who is board certified in emergency medicine, Dr. Fowler served eight years in the United States Navy before settling with his wife, Cindy, and their two children, Morgen and Wil, in the Texas Hill Country. Dr. Fowler is co-founder of The Geneva School of Boerne (Texas) and co-owner of the Urgent Care and Occupational Health Centers of Texas, PA. He presented “Managing the Business Aspects of Medicine,” a CME course, at Reunion Weekend 2012.

The Rio Grande Valley Alumni Chapter hosted an event on February 23 at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance. Alumni, community physicians and students from the MedEd and FASTS programs were treated to breakfast and two interesting CME presentations on “Code Status Conflict in Patients with Advanced Cancer” and the “Primary Care Paradox.” Photo Gallery
