Health Professions Education and Careers
We believe in building home-grown talent. Our goal is to increase the number of primary care physicians and other health professionals by developing strong "pipeline" programs throughout South Texas. More specifically, the South Texas AHEC recruits minority students from disadvantaged backgrounds for participation in mentoring and education programs designed to prepare and inspire talented students to enter into the field of health professions.
The South Texas AHEC helps hundreds of minority students from elementary school-aged children to college students learn more about careers in health care through sponsored projects. Students visit UTHSCSA and other health facilities in their respective communities to learn about career opportunities in health care by participating in dynamic hands-on activities. Our programs aim to strengthen science skills and increase the competitive applicant pool of minority students from disadvantaged backgrounds desiring to pursue health professions education and careers.
