Dr. Richards is a teacher of Gross Anatomy and Embryology for both first year medical students and first year dental students, as well as being involved in team-teaching senior medical students' selective courses in Advanced Gross Anatomy. He also co-teaches Gross Anatomy for Allied Health Students and Graduate Students, and he is the course director for a Head and Neck Anatomy course for dental students.
Before he became a full-time faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dr. Richards was an Adjunct Professor in Gross Anatomy and Embryology for first year medical students at UTHSCSA. He was also an Adjunct Professor in Gross Anatomy for the Department of Physical Therapy at UTHSCSA for several years.
Dr. Richards was chosen by the senior medical class of 2005 as one of two faculty members for charter membership in the UTHSCSA Gold Humanism Honor Society. The UTHSCSA female medical students have awarded Dr. Richards the Gender Equity Award, the AMWA Barbara Sanford Memorial Award, and the AMWA Barbara Sanford Equity Teaching Award. The medical class of 2011 honored him with the Teacher of the Year Award. The senior medical students have awarded him an Outstanding Faculty Award several times including the current Senior Class of 2014.
The UTHSCSA dental students have awarded Dr. Richards the Professor of the Year Award several times including the current first year class (Class of 2017). The dental students have also awarded Dr. Richards the Dental School Faculty Assembly Teaching Excellence Award.
In 2009, Dr. Richards received the University of Texas Health Science Center's highest teaching award, the Presidential Teaching Excellence Award. To the left, Dr. Richards is pictured receiving the award from Dr. William Henrich, M.D., President of UTHSCSA.
In 2010 Dr. Richards was inducted by the faculty into the University of Texas Health Science Center's Academy of Master Teachers. Later that year, he was awarded the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor by the University of Texas Board of Regents.
In 2013 Dr. Richards was elected as an Honorary Member of the UTHSCSA Dental Honor Society Omicron Kappa Upsilon
