    Beverly Heisler, Academic Coordinator Congratulations to Beverly Heisler, Academic Coordinator!
      She has been selected for the Presidential Employee Excellence in Service Award. We are very proud of Beverly and believe she is highly deserving of this award. Only five classified and/or administrative & professional staff members are selected each year for their overall outstanding job performance and contributions to the Health Science Center. Nominees must be individuals whose overall performance regularly and consistently exceed expectations and reflect a high level of service, trust-worthiness, and respect.

     

      The Presidential Employee Excellence in Service Awards are given to recognize staff members who have made truly distinctive contributions to the Health Science Center and our missions of teaching, research, patient care, and public service. (11/17/08)

     

    HSC's segment in PBS series wins Lone Star EMMY®. (11/4/08)
    Congratulations to Steven Austad, Ph.D. and Arlan Richardson, Ph.D.! One of three episodes recognized in a 13 part series, is titled "Aging with Dignity" and features Barshop Institute. The awards were presented during the 6th Annual Lone Star EMMY® Awards Gala on Oct. 18 at Verizon Wireless Theater in Houston.

    Congratulations to Sue Naylor! She has received notification that her joint proposal titled, "UTPA - Cancer Center at UTHSCSA Border Partnership," a P20 grant will be funded. (09/26/08)

     

    Congratulations to Omid Rahimi! Dr. Rahimi has been invited to join the UTHSCSA Academy of Master Teachers. He will join Linda Johnson, Tom King, Ellen Kraig, Robin Leach, Sue Naylor, Mary Vaughan, Kris Vogel and Frank Weaker as members of this elite teaching academy.     CSB faculty received 2 out of 7 newly awarded UT Academy of Health Science Education Grants! Congratulations to:

    • William Morgan!
      Dr. Morgan's is titled, "Use of a Constructionist Learning Module to Teach Complex Models of Statistics".

       

    • Frank Weaker!
      Dr. Weaker's is titled, "A 3-dimensional Skull- Pathways of Arteries".

     

    Congratulations to Russ Reiter! He was recently awarded the inaugural Aaron B Lerner Pioneer Award at a FASEB Summer Research Conference on melatonin! Aaron Lerner first isolated and identified melatonin. (9/9/08)

     

    Many of you will remember Dr. Bill Winborn, a retired faculty member of this department. Dr. Winborn submitted some images to the Nikon Small World photo contest. All of the images for the Nikon Small World 2008 Contest have been posted on their web site. The winners will be posted on October 15th. Dr. Winborn's image representing the Health Science Center is shown below:

    Department of Cellular and Structural Biology Welcomes Italian Exchange Students
    The UT Health Science Center's Department of Cellular and Structural Biology recently hosted five Italian medical students from the University of Bologna. The students came to participate in "Regional Anatomy of the Head, Neck and Trunk for the Foreign Medical Student," a five-week anatomy workshop.

    Viviana Perez, Ph.D., has been selected to receive the 2008 Barbara H. Bowman Scholarship. Congratulations! Dr. Perez is a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Arlan Richardson's laboratory. (8/6/08)

    Viviana Perez has just received word that she will be funded with a senior postdoctoral fellow grant award from the American Federation for Aging Research! (6/26/08)

     

    Holly Van Remmen, Ph.D. has just been informed that she will be the recipient of a Julie Martin MidCareer Grant Award from the American Federation for Aging Research! (6/26/08)

     

    Arlan G. Richardson, Ph.D. will be receiving the Lord Cohen Medal for Services to Gerontology at the annual meeting of the British Society for Research on Aging! (6/26/08)

     

    Luiz Penalva, Ph.D. has successfully funded a proposal to organize a workshop on RNA binding proteins! The workshop will be sponsored by the University of Andalusia in Spain. (6/26/08)

     

    Christi A. Walter, Ph.D. has been selected as
    Chair of the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology!
    Dr. Walter, who has been with the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences since 1988, has served as Cellular and Structural Biology's Interim Chair for the department, and brings both research and administrative expertise to the position. (6/12/08)

     

    Anson Pierce is the recipient of a newly funded mentored VA Research Award. (6/12/08)

     

    Steven N. Austad, Ph.D. has earned our congratulations for being named the Outstanding Alumnus of the Biology Department at Purdue University. (6/12/08)

    Linda Johnson, Tom King, and Omid Rahimi received 3 of the 10 Outstanding Faculty Awards given by the 2008 graduating Medical Class. In addition, Linda Johnson was an Assistant Marshal! (5/19/08)

     

    Dr. William Morgan recently returned from a trip to South Africa. He shared some extraordinary photos of the African Wildlife.

     

    Congratulations to Nikki Ruparel, a CSB graduate student being mentored by Dr. Ken Hargreaves. Nikki was recently awarded the Maria Yeung Student Research Award by the Dental School. (5/16/08)

    Jim Buchanan Buchanan recognized for 35 years of service:
    James Buchanan, Research Associate in the department of Cellular and Structural Biology, is honored for his 35 years of service with a commemorative plaque from President Cigarroa.
