Frank J. Weaker, Ph.D.

Adjunct Professor

Louisiana State Medical Center, 1975

Dr. Weaker is co-course director for Dental Histology and course director for Structures of the Head and Neck that is taught to first year Dental and Dental Hygiene students, respectively. He is also a lecturer and a lab instructor in the Dental Gross Anatomy courses.

There has been recent interest in the development of computer-aided teaching tools in the anatomical sciences. In the past seven years, he has been involved in the development of four CD-ROM atlases that are used by our Medical, Dental and Dental Hygiene students to augment their laboratory studies in microscopic and gross anatomy. The software for the Medical students contains a concise review of the ultrastructure of the cell and the morphology of basic tissues and organs systems followed by study questions. The Dental software contains an additional section that comprehensively reviews the structures of the oral cavity and several 3D animations of tooth development. The dental hygiene software is a diagrammatic representation of the body tissues and the development of the oral cavity.

Dr. Tom King of our department and Dr. Weaker have recently introduced the Virtual Microscopy for the Health Professional, which is an interactive software program that contains digitized images made from our student loan collection. The Virtual Microscope allows medical and dental students to use their computer as if it were a light microscope. The student is able to view a montage of tiled images stored on external hard drive. The student is able to increase or decrease magnification, as well as freely move the specimen as if it were on a microscope stage. Students can capture images and create their own atlases.

This year, Dr. Weaker received the University of Texas Health Science Center's Presidential Teaching Excellence Award for a third time! He was recipient of this prestigious award in 1992 and in 2003.

Over the years, Dr. Weaker has received numerous Teaching Awards such as Piper Professorship (Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation), Dental School Faculty Assembly Teaching Excellence Award, Recognition for Outstanding Faculty, Most Valuable Professor and Teacher Appreciation Award.
