Legal next of kin must call asap to get qualified . . . call the number above, press "0" then tell operator you need to make funeral arrangements and the operator will forward to appropriate department. Once qualified, the funeral home will pick up the body at the hospital morgue. A $21.00 death certificate fee is charged to the next of kin.
Bexar County CAN provide:
- Retrieval of the body, preparation of the body, simple casket, viewing or services for up to 2 hours, and body transported to the cemetery.
- All adults are buried three to a plot. All infants and children will be buried in single plots.
- Opening and closing of the grave
- Brief gravesite service allowed
- Granite headstone provided
- If the legal next of kin requests cremation, will allow for retrieval of the body and cremation of remains. Cremains can be given to family or placed in a plot with a granite headstone provided.
If a family wishes to have a religious service during the two hour viewing time, this is allowed. The legal next of kin must arrange for their own religious person to perform services during their designated time.
All honorably discharged veterans or eligible spouses will be buried at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery when possible.
The Pauper Burial Program provides a very simple and dignified service.
Bexar County DOES NOT provide:
- Limousine or transportation for families
- Obituary
- Police escort
- Funeral procession to the cemetery
- Flowers, prayer cards or guest books
- Viewing for cremations
- Urn for cremated remains
- Tent or chairs at cemetery
