Headline News: Scientists find novel mechanism of glioblastoma

Most research on glioblastoma development, a complicated tumor of the brain with a poor prognosis, has focused on the gene transcription level. However, scientists, including UT Health Science Center San Antonio researcher Luiz O. F. Penalva, Ph.D., suggest that post-transcriptional regulation could be equally or even more important.

Two UT Health Science Center San Antonio researchers, Cynthia Mojica, Ph.D., (pictured) and Gail Tomlinson, M.D., Ph.D., received a total of $4.7 million by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Headline News: Hydrogen sulfide reduces glucose injury in kidney cells

Hydrogen sulfide, a gas notorious for its rotten-egg smell, may have redeeming qualities after all. It reduces high glucose-induced production of scarring proteins in kidney cells, researchers from the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, including B.S. Kasinath, M.D., report in the <i>Journal of Biological Chemistry</i>. The paper is scheduled for print publication early this year.
